If branding counts for nothing in India - how can you plan a successful exhibition future in the sub-continent?

In the exhibition industry, most European exhibition brands head into India for a piece of the action. Of course, this is a seemingly sensible approach to extending your business and globalising your brand.

Any local market in Europe is saturated – so unless you access a new event in a newly evolving market, you have to look outside your regional boundaries.

And India is a growing economy. But I would suggest that very few European exhibition brands are actually making money in India.

Why? Be… Continue

Mediocrity can lead to stormy waters....

Having had a bad back recently, I decided I must take the plunge and go for a swim to ease the pain and set my ageing body back onto the road to recovery.

I had a condition called a 'hurty back'. A condition that afflicts men only. Women just get on with it!

Any how, I decided that swimming in the UK is not a pleasurable experience.

Upon arriving pool side, bleary eyed at 06:40am you are presented with 3 narrow lanes.

One for slow swimmers, one for medium and one for fast. I took the ‘safe’… Continue

The consumer is king – and the king simply doesn’t care enough about the environment.

Until a complete revolution in the minds and behaviour of the consumer takes place, the environment will continue to be a fashionable marketing asset rather than a genuine care.

You see the thing is; economic prosperity and environmental sustainability are not likely bedfellows. At least they aren’t yet.

Since I wrote my first rant on the environmental issue - I have been monitoring progress, or lack of it, from afar. And not a lot is happening in my opinion – apart from confusion and contradi… Continue

The power of positive programming & being brave

Inspiration comes in all sizes. Big, small, wide, short, old, tall, fat, young, thin, medium build. It can be distant, detached, a piece of art, close, emotional, a book, a song, a passing comment, an idea, an experience, it can also be expected, and even better unexpected.

My daughter went into hospital last week for an operation on both of her eyes. I know, it sounds dramatic. She is only 4 1/2. Her name is Daisy. She is quite a character and a little bit feisty, like her mummy.

We didn’t wa… Continue

Environment - A convenient truth

This was written for printers - but it is relevant for exhibitors, producers and exhibition contractors.

It is a crazy, beautiful world we live in. It is full of contradictions. On the one hand governments and the EU want us to be entrepreneurial and dynamic and on the other hand we are expected to be socially responsible and environmentally friendly.

But I, like most modern people, am a believer in positive aspects of environmental best practice. The biggest problem I have with the whole thin… Continue

Hi Marcus, how're you?

Just a quick one: I'm looking for an internation speaker for the following topic for FM-Expo and Conference, May 19th DWTC.

Implementing strategic eco-FM through a project is counterproductive if the supply chain does not adhere to a certain level of environmental responsibility. What are the trends in carbon reporting, and how are firms greening their products and supply chains for competitive advantage?

If you can think of a high profile speaker drop me a line.

Best regards

Paul

Hello Marcus,

I'm new to event crowd, have just joined the planet friendly group, and thought I'd introduce myself!
My name is Julie Patel and I am the event planner for a not for profit organisation called 'Positive Impact'.
Positive Impact looks to educate the event industry on sustainability. We run workshops for planners, suppliers, venues on such topics as BS 8901, Carbon, Energy, Water, Food & Waste, Green washing, Procurement & Destinations!

It would be great to learn more about what you do! Also, would you be able to give me a bit more of an insight into The Planet Friendly Group and advise as to whether you know of any other relevant groups on event crowd?
Look forward to hearing from you
Julie

Hi Marcus,
My name is Emma Thompson. I've recently signed up to Event Network through recommendation of John Sanders. I work for Organise This sustainable event management company in Manchester and wanted to say hello. We recently just implemented the first management system that fully complied with BS 8901 through an external certification process. I'm thoroughly enjoying reading all the great comments about sustainability on this page, it's great to see so many people enthusiastic about this critical topic. Please can you give me an oversight about the Planet Friendly Group and recommend any other groups relevant to this topic I could join? I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Emma.
