As you are probably aware, customers, users and members expect to talk to you and for you to listen. They want to connect, share, educate and influence you and each other, whether you like it or not. The world’s best marketers are celebrating this new era of customer centricity and giving their communities a voice through social networking.

Building a social network is a long-term investment in the values and needs of the consumer, and the way to become an integral and trusted part of a community, without blatant solicitation and promotion.

Building a community campaign relies heavily upon understanding the members and recognizing their needs. Success is defined by credibility and acceptance by key influencing members who will propel the campaign through word-of-mouth.

Thanks to technologies supporting Web 2.0, you now have the ability to develop a networked community and leverage it – going beyond simple blogs and chat rooms. I promtoe a platform that creates a social network on a business level: that is an efficient use of the member’s time and meets their information and networking needs. This platform lets companies quickly and easily create and lead communities of purpose, allowing customers, partners, event attendees, developers—anyone—to meet, build relationships, share ideas, contribute content, and learn from one another. A robust community builds loyalty, gives you a way to quickly understand customer values, needs, and opinions, and provides you with the insight you need to better serve your members, increase their number and provide access by sponsors to fully fund this initiative.

What are your thoughts on what defines a professional social network?

I agree that Web 2.0 technologies with the right maintenance could leverage some great initiatives. We have created a social networking site (using ning again:) for our customers, who attend our events mainly. It proved to be a successful way of communication. It's great for them, as people appreciate to network and be connected with other practitioners and policy makers. It's great for us! We are switched on the current themes, hot issues and problems that could feed into our future support and events.
